Cyclists/Motorbikes

Cyclists/motorbikes: you can ride in the bus lane during operational times

If you're a cyclist or motorcyclist you can use the bus lane during operational times. However you'll still need to be aware of the other lane users and if you're travelling slower, be sure to let them pass when its safe to do so. Check for signs that say when bus lanes are operational.

During operational times, only the vehicles listed below can use bus lanes:

  • Buses
  • Bicycles
  • Motorcycles, motor scooters, mopeds
  • Emergency services vehicles

Parking or stopping on the lanes is prohibited during operational times. Motorcyclists doing so will be given a parking ticket, incurring a fine of $60 and a potential tow fee. If your motorcycle is towed, please contact the Christchurch City Council or the New Zealand Police.

You can phone the Christchurch City Council on (03) 941 8741 if you see other vehicles using or parking in bus lanes during operational times or your vehicle has been towed.

Outside operational times, the bus lanes revert to on-street parking with space for cyclists, where indicated.
