Motorists

Motorists: you cannot drive or park in the bus lanes during operational times.

How we travel around our city is changing. As a motorist you have to stick to the centre lane and avoid driving or parking in bus lanes during operational times. Street signage will tell you when these times are, and when they revert back to on-street parking with space for cyclists, where indicated.

During operational times, only the vehicles listed below can use bus lanes:

  • Buses
  • Bicycles
  • Motorcycles, motor scooters, mopeds
  • Emergency services vehicles

Parking, stopping or driving in the lanes is prohibited during operational times. Motorists doing so incur a $150 fine for driving in a bus lane and/or a $60 fine and a tow fee. If your vehicle is towed please contact the Christchurch City Council (link this to enforcement page) or NZ Police.

You can phone the Christchurch City Council on (03) 941 8741 if you see other vehicles using or parking in the bus lanes during operational times or your vehicle has been towed.

Outside operational times, the bus lanes revert to on-street parking with space for cyclists, where indicated.
